Climate Change (CLM)

A planetary material challenge — where physical systems shift faster than human systems adapt.

Climate Change is one of Challenge Earth’s Five Global Challenges. To read this challenge, Challenge Earth enters the Material Mode — the mode that interprets shifts in Earth’s physical systems: atmosphere, oceans, land, ice, and energy flows.

In Material Mode, climate change is understood as a dimensional and infrastructural transformation, not only an environmental one. It defines the physical baseline on which societies, economies, and technologies depend.

Atmospheric Dynamics

Greenhouse gases, radiative forcing, temperature gradients, jet streams, and extreme weather patterns. Assessment focuses on coherence between measurement, modelling, and observed change.

Oceanic Systems

Heat absorption, acidification, circulation shifts, sea-level rise, and marine ecosystem disruption. Evaluation covers cross-domain consistency between ocean physics and biosphere impacts.

Cryosphere Stability

Melting ice sheets, glacier retreat, permafrost thaw, and albedo loss. Assessment focuses on long-horizon predictability and feedback loops.

Land & Biosphere Response

Drought, wildfire regimes, soil degradation, biodiversity loss, and agricultural shifts. Evaluation covers the alignment between ecological models and real-world resilience.

Energy & Infrastructure Stress

Heatwaves, grid instability, cooling demand, water scarcity, and infrastructure failure. Assessment focuses on the coherence between climate projections and infrastructural planning.

Cognitive Gaming

Three analysis modes — Cohesion, Truthfulness, Quantification — turn climate evaluation into a playable sequence of choices.
